Graduate Award in Printmaking Exhibition

Graduate Award in Printmaking Exhibition
Ella Georgiou & Imogen Climo

12th – 15th December 2024
Private View: Friday 13th December 5:30-8:30pm
East Street Arts Project Space, Patrick Studios

Throughout August and September we hosted two graduates from the University of Leeds on a residency to develop ideas in their printmaking practice. This exhibition showcases the work produced over the residency.

Ella Georgiou uses sound in conjunction with printmaking, her practice is process and experience based. She uses technology alongside traditional intaglio printmaking techniques to develop works that spark sonic contemplation, to consider spaces and their hidden sounds. Through extracting background noise and the indistinguishable sound of printmaking processes, Ella creates multichannel audio pieces emphasising and manipulating those often-ignored sounds. Aiming to place the viewer within a sonic experience in which they can feel an almost tangible presence.
Ella seeks to shift the perception of sound, to take interest in the unremarkable hum that continually occurs. Drawing and printmaking are used as a vessel of physical translation from silence, into sound, into the visual realm.

.
Imogen Climo is a printmaker who has used the residency to explore the multifaceted concept of ‘home’ as she experienced returning to her hometown after living at University. Reflecting on her time living away from her childhood ‘home’ and navigating what ‘home’ will mean to her in the future.
Using etching, screen printing and photographic printing techniques to present ‘home’ as a site of nostalgia, ritual and familiarity, while thinking about its physicality as a building and geographical location. ‘Home’ may be a different location for everyone, yet at these individual sites people encounter shared feelings and experiences. Imogen hopes that she has tapped into aspects of ‘home’ that are inter-mutual while also remaining personal to her and asks her audience to reflect on their own relationship with the idea of ‘home’.
.
The Graduate Award in Printmaking is funded by the University of Leeds and has been initiated in collaboration with Leeds Print Workshop to nurture and retain student talent in the city.
