Arabic Calligraphy & Screen Printing

16th November @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

£32.50 – £65.00

Explore calligraphy and create screen prints inspired by the patterns in Arabic calligraphy on this one day workshop.

Join us for a one day calligraphy taster course to learn Arabic calligraphy. During the first part of the day you will learn flourishes and basic lettering, before moving onto an abstract design. You will also learn how to write your own name and some basic techniques in decorative calligraphy.

In the second part of the day you will make a screen print with an abstract design and will learn how to use layering and colour to make your own individual prints.

You’ll be guided through creating imagery for screen printing, mixing inks, exposing screens and screen printing methods for printing onto paper.

What experience do I need?

This workshop is for complete beginners in calligraphy and screen printing. Those who already have some printmaking experience may find it interesting to explore some new ideas using calligraphy patterns.

What will I make?

You will create a calligraphic drawing of your own name, as well as taking away at least two prints onto A3 paper of abstract calligraphy work.

Your Tutor

Hafifa Ahmed has several years experience in learning Arabic calligraphy and has gained knowledge in several different styles. Hafifa recently taught South Asian women online during covid, as well as home educated students at Young Masters visual arts school in Bradford.

Hafifa’s practice employs techniques of visual language using drawing, photographs, 3D, layering and moving image in my work. Hafifa’s concerns are text, memory, narrative and decay. Making visible the journeys that many of us can go through privately, Hafifa’s work focuses on the subtle as well as the psycho-spiritual processes.

Do I need to bring anything?

All materials and equipment will be provided for the session. If you have any of your own calligraphy pens and inks feel free to bring these along with you.

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
