Spend a creative day exploring the possibilities of textile screen printing. Whether you’re completely new to screen printing or looking to develop your existing skills, this practical workshop will introduce you to the process and give you plenty of opportunity to experiment.

You’ll learn how to prepare imagery for screen printing, as well as how to coat and expose screens using the photo emulsion method. You’ll also discover how to mix textile pigment inks and explore the endless possibilities of colour.
Throughout the day, you’ll develop your own surface pattern prints, experimenting with layering, colour, shape and pattern to create interesting and individual textile designs. The emphasis is on exploring ideas, learning through experimentation and having fun with the process.

What experience do I need?

This is a mixed-ability workshop, suitable for complete beginners as well as those with previous screen printing experience.
No prior experience is necessary. If you’re already familiar with screen printing, you can use the day to develop your ideas, experiment with new approaches and get guidance and advice from the tutor.

What will I make?

You’ll create a selection of screen-printed fabric samples, exploring different techniques, colours and layered designs.
There will also be the opportunity to print onto simple fabric items such as tea towels or cotton bags, so feel free to bring along some plain items of your own to personalise.

Who is my tutor?

Kirstie Williams is a founding member of Leeds Print Workshop. She is a practising textile artist and printmaker exploring natural colour, dyeing and screen printing, as well as bookbinding techniques which she uses to create her own archive. She has extensive experience delivering workshops to a wide range of audiences and communities across Leeds and West Yorkshire. She is passionate about bringing together a creative community in Leeds through the running and development of Leeds Print Workshop.
